Awards

Japanese traditional style (known as irezumi / horimono) tattoo contests seem to have first originated rather suddenly during the Tempō period (1830-1844). It was this period that gatherings were actually organized and prices awarded for the most beautiful specimens of tattooing. Judging was based on the subtlety and detail of composition and on originality of design.
